I notice that they have started eating a lot more and dug bigger tunnels and chambers. Could it be that they are preparing to produce alates soon?

how long have you had the colony and what species is it? Most colonies produce Alates after a couple years of growth

Well first of all come join our Camponotus Crew! 2nd it seems very unlikely they are producing alates, they're probably just expanding because their numbers will be going up.
