I am not familiar with the species but it could be down to the time of day?
I missed tetramorium caespitum last year to later find out they would have their flight at the crack of dawn or just shortly after. Considering that was just after 5am where I am from I was out cold for the whole thing since the earliest I woke was generally between 7 and 8am depending on how nice my son was that day and if I was in work of it was a week day I still did not get up until half 7

Research is important before during and even after you have established a colony. There is always time to learn and to listen to others experiences. Live by this and your ants will thrive. Fail to do so and your experience may be brief.

Are you sure they are not Lasius? At first glance they appear surprisingly similar. I am not even sure Prenolepis are common in Iowa, as they practically don’t exist here, one state over.
"God made every kind of wild beasts and every kind of livestock and every kind of creeping things;" (including ants) "and God saw that it was good." Genesis 1:25

I just found a prenolepis imparis queen, and guess they fly in the evening
