Having watched some Myrmica flights first hand, I completely agree with you. The drones come out and even try to mount the ordinary workers until a female elate comes bursting out. I also noticed they don't seem to fly as much as Lasius as they tend to quickly land (or never even take off!). I only saw two Myrmica nuptial flights, both of which were in my direct area (mainly my garden), so I can't say this is what all Myrmica flights look like, only that this is what happened in my local area this year.
Hibernating Lasius Niger, Lasius Flavus, and Myrmica Rubra. Zzz..
