Red photography paper.
I’ve read people saying to use it and some saying not to. So I was wondering if I should get some? Also how and why does it work if it works at all?
Re: Red photography paper.
I recommend it. Ants can’t see red light So if u use it to cover a test tube , it will feel dark
Keeper of :
Camponotus albosparsus x2
Camponotus Irritans
Hoping for pheidole colony

It really depends on the ants you are keeping. Ants do not see like we do I think they just pick up light levels and stuff like that but they actually use pheromone trails to know where to go.
Now I say it depends on the ants because they say Lasius Niger can pick up red lights and will not be fooled into thinking it is dark.
The purpose of using the red film is so u can see nest activities without disturbing the nest but I have seen loads of keepers use papers on test tubes and paper rock covers against terrariums so it is not actually necessary or that important.

Research is important before during and even after you have established a colony. There is always time to learn and to listen to others experiences. Live by this and your ants will thrive. Fail to do so and your experience may be brief.

All of my ants can see through red plastic film. It helps a little with Formica, but they can still see my movements through the red film. But it has no effect on Lasius or Camponotus.

Works for my T. Immigrans
Proverbs 6:6-8
Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
