Newly eclosed ants knowing on cotton?

They came out today and are biting and tearing the cotton. I think they want food.

yup. You should introduce your colonies to an outworld when the first worker arrives. Use the drinking straw wedged between the exit cotton and the side of the tube to act as a tunnel. Then set the tube in the outworld. Feed the ants in the outworld, not the tube. (make sure you have a barrier in your outworld)
