I recommend clean sand that you buy from an arts and crafts store, or the kind they sell at Dollarama if you are in North America. It is usually quite clean. Perlite seems to also be a popular choice, too.

Hope others can chime in with other recommendations.

I would use fine sand but I don't think it would matter if it was course sand. Yes, perhaps just half or under half full in every chamber. Good luck!

Incorporating soil of some kind in general is fine. The risk you run when using soil from your yard, for example, is that it contains a pesticide or some chemical that may be harmful to the ants. Also, using a digging medium in an Omni Nest, will of course take some of the "Omni" out of "Omni Nest" since the ants will use it to block your view ;)

Hydration would still be done using the hydration chambers and the blue sponge. If you want to hydrate the soil/sand in the other chambers, I suppose just dripping a little water on the top would be fine. It will find its way into the chambers and into the sand.
