1 the aquarium grade sand would do perfectly. if you are worried you can boil it just in case.

3 what is your setup? water moats are always nice but baby powder and alcohol (talcum powder) will work if you have glass/acrylic walls. If you want to be extra safe you can order Fluon (insect-a-slip). Although Vaseline is also ideal my experience was not that good with it for my c. pennsylvanicus.
