They are waiting for the ideal conditions to have their nuptial flight. You can expect a nuptial flight very soon.

I monitored several harvester ant colonies last year and saw similar alate activity for a few days. Then a rainstorm hit and they flew the next day.

It usually happens after a rain storm. Many wonder why that is but I think its because the rain softens that ground up allowing the queen to dig her new home after mating. Just a thought though.

You may still find dealate queens if you turn around rocks and logs, even a few days after the nuptial flight. Always remember carry a small container with you. :)
