Re: Queen Ant Identification
Most of the carpenter ants i caught or seen have wings. It doesn’t mean she is infertile. Many winged queen have raised many successful colonies while many queens without wings have been known to be infertile.
It’s like a 50-50.

Re: Queen Ant Identification
... Dang it. I just let one go that had wings after about three days of it not doing anything. Was my first ever queen I'd caught. I thought for sure it hadn't mated. I'm really new to the ant keeping business and, I'll be honest, that AntsCanada handbook is not nearly as helpful as I would have liked.AntLuvForever wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 6:59 amMost of the carpenter ants i caught or seen have wings. I would recommend watching the AntsCanada YouTube tutorials instead of the handbook personally.... Dang it. I just let one go that had wings after about three days of it not doing anything. Re: Queen Ant Identification
Looking to get a ID on this species and know if it's a queen or not and what to look put for it it isn't abdomen is swollen and looks to have hair on it huge jaws ? https://imgur.com/a/h2YqtQl I think it's a black carpenter ant queen but not sure doesn't have wings but has other characteristics of a queen
Re: Queen Ant Identification
Hard to tell from the image, how long is she? If she is about 15mm she is a camponotus queen.
My current colonies:
-Miniature Military(formica neogagates)
-Black Hearts(crematogaster cerasi)
In search of new camponotus colony
[Have a look at antmaps.org]

Re: Queen Ant Identification
Found this queen. Smaller than the other queens I’ve seen. Black and kinda shiny. She finally has workers. They are very tiny. Smallest ants I’ve ever seen lol. From researching I'm assuming monomorium? But I’m a beginner. This is my first time doing this.
I want to get a setup for them and such.
