I'm just a newbie so don't criticize my mistakes, but is this a queen? I though I saw it trying to break off it's wings so I test tubed it and now it is moving around erratically inside the tube... Please help. http://imgur.com/kU962BZ

we need a close up of the ant as well as measurement and location found. It is impossible to ID without a close up clear photo
Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

I can't get a closer picture... Only have iPhone. I'm in East Tennessee and the ant is about 6 millimeters. Too small to be a queen?

we need a clear photo to ID. If it is absolutely not possible, then do some research and look at lots of pictures of males and queens. But, to be safe do not throw it away. you might think it's a male and it's actually a queen. if it's a male, it will die in the next few days. if it's a queen, it will live.

You could try finding something like this! Check electronics stores or even just walmart (like the second link) and maybe you can find a cheap macro lense that can clip or strap onto your phone. If you have a magnifying glass of any kind around as well, holding that up against the camera lense has worked for me too.

Post a location with every ID request. ;)

This is a Lasius male.

When do you suggest I look for the queens? All there were in the swarm were the males.
