The cotton that is holding the waterside in, looks dry, and it's worrying me...There is still water touching it on the other side, but just that one side looks dry.

How bad of an idea would it be to just stick in a small piece of something to push the cotton back more while my queen is inside?

Or do you just think im overreacting?

You can always try pushing it back a little, but be very careful when you do so! If you push it too far, you risk the water spilling into the test tube. I would just elevate the end which holds the water by a couple of degrees and let gravity do the rest for you.
