Hi.
I'm thinking about buying a Lasius Flavus queen and some workers, but I read that they develop wings when they enter the procreation phase.
So will they start flying around in your apartment in the summer or what ? Could someone explain that to me ?
I'm really interested in that species.. and is there a way to buy some root aphids ? I couldn't find anything on the internet so far..

Thank You
During procreation the queen will lay special eggs which develope into reproductive ants which have wings. They then wait for the correct conditions to fly off and mate, however in captivity these conditions are never met and the ants don't fly they just walk about aimlessly. Also the queen only produces these winged-ants once the colony has reached a large size, normally when a colony is 3-4 years old.

As for root aphids in captivity they aren't required. I just use small drops of sugar water or honey, which is very similar to what the root aphids excrete.

Hope this is useful, if you have any more questions do ask.

I would only guess that to have root aphids you would need a living plant.
