The queen doesn't need to fit in the straw. Only the workers forage. The queen stays inside. Also for an outworld, I have always used tupperware containers with rounded edges. To make the hole to connect the tubing to, you can either drill it, or I have always used the tip of a hot glue gun. It is tapered, so I just keep pushing it into the plastic until it reaches the correct size. Then I insert the tubing And seal it with hot glue or sillicone.

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Oh that really helps because I happen to have a hot glue gun, and I never knew that the queen doesn't forage! So thanks for the info idahoantgirl. And thanks Steven. Also, would it be alright to post pictures of other queens that I caught because I'm not sure what type they are, but I think Formica or Lasius.

Ok thanks, I'll post in like three days when I check on my queens. I check on them once a week is that too much?

Your refering to founding queens? Then that would depend on the species. Certain species handle stress better than others.

I don't know what a founding queen is but I'm talking about 4 that I just caught. And I'm not sure what type they are.
