Old railway 6x6 log wood
Hello guys I found a old railway 6x6 wood block, but you can smell something oil or gas in it, can I use that as a nest of my future carpenter ant? Thank you

Yeah you should not use that log, the fumes will kill the colony
Ants I have-
camponotus compressus colony- the shadow warriors.

That smell you smell is called creosote. It is used as an insecticide using pressure treating methods for wood products. It will kill your ants, termites, and any other insects it comes in contact with.
