Thanks, this really helps. I think I will be able to get you the species!
Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?
There are so many fascinating ants right where you live!
I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that aren't in your area.

Re: Nuptial flights in the UAE
but if they are all from the same sub-family doesn't that mean that they are pretty much the same?

No, all of the genera in the subfamily are not alike, take Camponotus and Crematogaster for example, they are both in the subfamily Formicinae, but are very much different. The subfamily of you ant is in is Formicinae, but that's not enough, you need to know the genus which is Catagalyphis, and that should be enough, it's just nice to know the species.

But Camponotus and Crematogaster are in different subfamilies, Camponotus in Formicinae, Crematogaster in Myrmicinae, you can easily tell apart Formicine and Myrmicine ants by their petiole, Myrmicines have a post-petiole which is like a second segment of the petiole, all other subfamilies don't have this.antperson24 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 12:47 pmNo, all of the genera in the subfamily are not alike, take Camponotus and Crematogaster for example, they are both in the subfamily Formicinae, but are very much different. Idk if it helps, but in the video at 1:36, he finds a cataglyphis nodus colony and tells a bit about them. Basically he says that these ants can not climb well and should be given large flat outworlds and also the are very fast and can 'glide' through air if they fall
