I was lucky enough to find a campo queen last weekend in Tempe. Was collecting Pogonomyrmex harvesters for my son's ant farm and a few feet over from their main anthill we dug into the Camponotis taenamyrmex colony. I found the queen stumbling around. She and her dozen workers we collected are doing fine so far. I don't think it was a "new" colony -- we were just lucky that they moved toward the surface where it was warm. This is our first queen and we feel very lucky.
Anyone in AZ have luck yet this year? We are going to Flagstaff this weekend and since it is still snowing I don't expect to see any ants. Will still turn over rocks though and bring test tubes and cotton balls. One can always dream, right?
Happy hunting!
