Colorado Nupital Flights

Re: Colorado Nupital Flights
There is supposed to be a ton of thunderstorms this week. Of course, it is Colorado so you never know lol. But I'm hoping we get those afternoon storms.
I know after rain storms is best to go looking, but when it rains well into the night (10PM or later), will most species wait to fly until dawn? Do they care if it is light out?

Re: Colorado Nupital Flights
Last night I caught 4 Solenopsis Molesta. The air was just thick with them. Was just before sunset. Also saw a Lasius Latipes colony preparing for Nuptial Flight.

Re: Colorado Nupital Flights
I'm my area around grand junction at least, nuptial flight only happens once a year around June. So at this point in time i don't expect new queen until next year.FrankieS95 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 09, 2018 6:24 amI just got into ant keeping recently and was unable to find any queens, but adopting with GAN so looking forward to next year! Are there any ant species that have nuptial flights past/around this time of year?
Re: Colorado Nupital Flights
So, there are still a whole heap of ants that will be flying this year, Lasius definitely and some other species. Right now I'm hoping to stumble onto a Formica fusca queen. I doubt it will happen, because I'm not going out and looking for them(I know I'm lazy but I already have a whole bunch of queens)... If anyone in Denver-Boulder area finds one I'd love to buy her and get to meet you!

Are you on Facebook? If so find the Colorado Ant Keepers page. We have a few members that have more Formica than they know what to do with.

Re: Colorado Nupital Flights
Hi all -
Getting warmer so I thought I'd revive this thread.
I am in downtown Denver, close to City Park. City Park is actually pretty big and there are some water features, so maybe I'll get lucky and find some queens there. But, I'm curious if there are any other people in Denver who might have some recommendations about where/when we might go and hunt queens.
Also, what I REALLY want is to catch a honeypot queen. I might have to drive around for that, but still interested in any info anyone has!
thanks!!

Snowing here in Denver, and supposed to be cold for a couple of days, then high 70's by the end of the week. So, getting closer still.
I really want honeypots so if you happen to hear about a Myrmecocystus mexicanus flight, I can jump in the car and drive to the western slope
