its warming up now so i'm hoping for sightings of some prenolepis imparis colonies. took some of my queens out of hibernation. also i found some social parasites during the winter a couple weeks ago under logs so if you want to find queens you might want to look under there.

Haven't seen any Prenolepis imparis flights yet here in Illinois but hoping soon. I have found several Lasius umbratus, Interjectus, and Claviger queens. Rolled a log over and found a small Lasius Niger colony with a dead queen swarmed with several parasite queens of all 3 species mentioned so tried an experiment with them till winter ants fly. So far have 16 queens in individual test tubes with 10-20+ Lasius Niger workers and they're taking care of the queen. I'll know if it's successful if they start laying eggs.

Anyone here in Illinois or the STL area?

For anyone in Illinois or the STL area. I was at the park earlier today and prenolepis imparis aka winter ants were swarming around the entrances of their nests. Expect nuptiual flights over the next 2 days
