Hello, my son who lives in Wellington NZ is keen to get into ant farming as a hobby. Is there anywhere in NZ you can buy some equipment to get started? Thank you

Hi there, I am also in NZ, long time ant watcher but looking into keeping and have no idea where to start. Would love any advice from anyone on the best places to get get any type of housing and when I can expect to see nuptial fights in Wellington.

Hi I'm in Australia (right next to you guys!). I'm so thrilled to hear that nuptial flights are occurring, because that means I'll see them soon too!

Edit: I would have gone to ant keeping depot to get stuff but due to COVID I don't think it's safe. I will see what I can find

It's the middle of New Zealands summer season but where I am in Auckland it rained heavy yesterday and today its been very sunny, this morning I saw two ant spots outside swarming with male ants and throughout today I've been spotting two different types of queen ants, not sure if I'm stating the obvious but now might be a good time for queen hunting

I got a queen like two months ago in Blenheim in a vineyard, and now one last week here in Nelson, they are quite different, but I can't find info about NZ species. I posted in the Identification centre of the forum the pics of them. I hope someone can help.

I have heard that sugar ants are great.
My current colonies:
-Miniature Military(formica neogagates)
-Black Hearts(crematogaster cerasi)
In search of new camponotus colony
[Have a look at antmaps.org]

Iridomyrmex, Pheidole or Camponotus (sugar ant) species. They are all fully claustral that are tolerant and grow well.
