OK it was funny today I found thatvthey had moved sand fro the outworld to the test tube to dry out the lemon water I guess. But I just found that funny.

My ants do that all the time. They try to make a more natural ground for the colony, no matter how many Cotten balls I put to stop the water.

I am going to try to connect the other test tube tomorrow and take them out of the outworld but maybe I will put some sand in there for them.

Ok,let me clear something up this is me on a new account because my old one signed me out and I could not get back in, but now that's solved and onto your question. I think there is a debate on that and maybe they go inactive for a while but do not actutally hibernate. I have not kept them for very long so I don't know.

So diapause?

I have found carpenter ants HATE to move. Mine waited until the cotton ball was yellow from their poop to move out.Pretty sure they were living off teh sugar water in their arena for a while as their water was probably polluted.

Yea maybe something like that. The cotton is covered mostly in black mold stuff but also pink and yellow stuff. It just got really cold last night so I moved them to the heated garage and tey seem to be fine but I am gonna try to get my hands on a lightbulb so I can get the queen to move away from the cotton so I can grab he with my tweezers and put her in the test tube then I will dump the workers into the outworld and they will eventually find the queen, or so I hope.

You can dump the queen… I have had some casualties though… I would suggest pulling the queen and 5 workers for the tube, as they release pheromones of the new nest so other ants will come…. Pls note the queen may leave the new nest and return shortly.
