Does anyone have any previous knowledge or tips on finding and caring for "acorn ants"? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
are you talking about the temnothorax kind? i would just go looking in acorns for them i found a colony once but couldn't bring them home due to lack of supplies but when i came back i found some tapinoma sessile (which i kept) in an acorn. so what kind are you talking about many ants live in acorns.

Yes!
Predicted it! We have workers! In fact, One of the Lasius niger queens will now have to get an outworld, i am making one for them right now! She has 10-11 Workers and i will have to feed them!
The other Lasius niger queen doesn't have an workers but seem to be awaiting them soon,
The unidentified Lasius queen (will make a proper id thread) has two Nanitics and is awaiting two more in the next 3 days i believe!
Now the Formica queen isn't doing that great, she only has two pupae and that's all! Altough i will separate her from the others and let her be for a long time! Now for the Photos!

1st Lasius niger Queen:

Now here is the Container in which the Lasius niger colony will move into:

iv'e never kept them but i have had an interest in them for some while and i still don't know much but here is what i know.
1. the queens are tiny
2 the colonies usually stay under 100-300 workers
3 some speices are polygenous (i think)
4 some species are slave makers (really cool)
5 the death rate for a colony or queens in the wild are crazy during winter.
6 easy to find if you just look though acorns (best way to do it is to make a small hole or rip in the acorn and then tap on it. some workers will sometimes come out and see whats going on)

Hey guys, Irish ant keeper here.
Last night before leaving the ants be, I have 3 Lasius Niger queen's with their first nanitics. 2 queen's had 2 workers and the third only had 1 who was active but still pale.
I have many more queen's 5 of which are due to have their first workers real soon so I am dieing to get home from work to check :D :D

I also have 2 Myrmica queens one is Rubra for sure and the other I hope us Rubra but could be ruginodis. Unfortunately what backs this up is they may be in the same forging area but they keep well away from one and other :(
I hope they are the same and are just being moody. The suspected ruginodis does have eggs as she was caught first so with luck she is Rubra and is being defensive of her eggs. The second desired to dig in the layer of sand I had added so they did not have to walk on coldish glass in the morning (I know. I spoil pets to much lol)

I will post pictures to my drive after work today and share the link.
Research is important before during and even after you have established a colony. There is always time to learn and to listen to others experiences. Live by this and your ants will thrive. Fail to do so and your experience may be brief.

2 of my L.Niger queens now have workers. Hoping that the others follow in their footsteps before hibernation starts. Though I think my L.Flavus queens will be waiting till after hibernation along with my Myrmica Rubra queens. All of which have eggs or larvae.
