Test tube set up

I recently had a run of good luck finding 7 Camponotus floridanus queens by my work. But the last 2 I had never laid any brood and died, i used the AC standard test tube set up (3/4 water, contton ball, queen, cotton ball), but since Camponotus prefer a dryer nest should I do a dryer test tube set up?

Also how warm do Camponotus like there test tube nests to be (roughly)

Thanks for any advice

Hello there,

I think it's much more comfortable for the queens of there is less water inside the testtube. Like I only filled my testtubes (some temporarily selfmade ones) with like perhaps 1/3 or 1/2 of the testtube so the queen got more than enough space to hydro regulate. About their preferred temperatur I would say arround 20-28°C but that is only a guess. I think you should just try to keep them at room temperatur. For me it's basicly 25-30 for my ants all the time.

I think if you offer them enough space in your testtube they will probably love it.
Doing some proper research is the best way to start an antcolony.
