I don't think she's fert :(

Re: I don't think she's fert :(
I don't really check up on her much just to add water about once a week. And I don't have AC so the room is never below 25c so always above 72F. I will try a test tube setup I'm just worried it will leak and she will die as I did up a few test test tubes and all leaked or absorbed all the water :/

make sure you're the right sized cotton ball, and don't push it in too far into the water or it will leakjasont200 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2017 8:56 pmI don't really check up on her much just to add water about once a week. My problem is the opening is smaller than the rest of the tube. I'm going to do up a test test tube again tonight. Is it ok if I store it on a incline to prevent flooding?
Re: I don't think she's fert :(
This is my test tube I just made up and I think I could trust it with my queen. I'm going to keep an eye on it over the last 4 hours of my shift then go home and make one up for her.
Re: I don't think she's fert :(
This was the hardest thing I had to do today. She would not go into the tube. She even almost got away. I hope she likes her new home. I have it on a slight incline so if the cotton ball does leak she won't be flooded and die.
Re: I don't think she's fert :(
Great news everyone I checked on her today and she has 6 eggs I'm super excited about this. Thank you all for your help. How long will take for them to hatch? And if I attach a 2nd test tube to the first and use it to hold the food would that work?
Re: I don't think she's fert :(
Congratulations! I'm new here as well so I can't tell you exactly how long it will take. We caught our Camponotus queens in the beginning of May. After putting them into test tubes, Queen #1 laid her eggs after one week, Queen #2 had hers in one day, and Queen #3 took almost a month. Right now, Queen #1 and #2 have pupae but none have hatched yet. And Queen #3's brood are still larvae. It's definitely slow-going but we're enjoying the suspense.

I'm ok with slow going I really need the time to plan out how I'm going to feed them and prevent them from getting out.

Yeah, I think that the plastic container was too large. They really want a small volume of space to take care of their eggs. I think it's kind of like cats who like to be in boxes because it is an easily defensible and controllable space. Also, with the test tube set up like that, the humidity of the test tube is much higher than in the plastic container, so the conditions must be much better for her.
There is a guide to read on how to take care of ants on AntsCanada for $20, it really helps! It's a pdf, so it is not too hard to download it, even on bad internet.
