Why does my third queen ant keep DIGGING at her cotton?!!?! :0
Out of the 3 camponotus queens i caught 2 are doing fine! the queen with a ton of brood has layed about 12 -14 eggs in just the last 3 days!!! and the 2nd hasn't layed yet but shes very calm and i feel she will lay anytime now. But... my third queen does nothing but vigorously dig at the front cotton keeping her in her test tube... Shes pulled it so bad that it looks like some crazy ant pillow fight in there or something... ive had to replace it once already and shes almost half way through again. anyone have a reason why?.. At least shes energetic!

Assuming they are all the same species, try to troubleshoot the difference between your queen that laid eggs and the one that didn't.
I had the same problem with one of my queens.
Most likely she is too stressed.
Typical reasons this might occur are:
She's not kept in a dark room.
The room is too cold or hot.
The test tube might either be too humid or too dry.
Depending on the species, she might be semi claustral and needs a bigger starting chamber and needs to eat.
You may have been disturbing her too much. I suggest only checking up on her once a week or two.

I have a queen that is doing that. All my queens are in a individual test tubes, wrapped in tin foil and kept in a dark place. Some have laid eggs, some haven't. Some have not removed their wings, some have.
Ant queens are individual. I may give the one digging in the cotton some soil to see if she wants to have a more natural nest or release her in the garden.

Thanks for the helpful advise guys! and one more question im gonna add to that. I caught these ant queens from colonies already being established, about 15 to 20 workers strong. Im worried that having the queen and her few workers in the tube they will get hungry and need feeding soon. What do i do? To start im almost defiantly sure that they are Camponotus noveboracensis which are a Fully claustral species. but obviously she had her established workers already feeding her. i don't want to stress them out but im worried they might get to hungry..also only one queen has quite a few workers. the other one has only 3 workers and the last has none as my previous post explained. Any suggestions? also my formicarium will be getting here sometime this week. Should i go ahead and introduce my queen with a lot of brood and workers in already?

Did you catch the queens but leave the workers?!
I should say you brood boost them if so and hope for the best.

I caught workers for 2 of the queens. One has about 12 - 15, the other has 3. And the third didnt have any workers with herformica123 wrote:Did you catch the queens but leave the workers?!
