I wanted my ants to leave there current nest and move to a cleaner set up.
At the moment they are in the bottom right of this set up in a plastic pot that has an opeing to the tube in the top that leads uop to the testtube set up. I know they can get to the entrence of the tube in the pot but i have not seen them come up to the water / suger water. I have also covered the Testtubes and portal, so its not that the top is in the light.
About 3 days ago I removed the water and food from the pot in the hope they would move out on there own.
I am pretty sure they could climb up if they wanted, but how long to leave them before I should be conserned? after 4 weeks since the first Nanite arrived i still only have 5 or 6. So conserned that while the brood is larger the colony is not growing how can you tell if they are not feeding / drinking?
Edit top covered and a pot like they are in to show whats below

It may be too steep for them actually. What species of ants do you have?
Re: Ants not leaving nest to forage
I am an extremely inexperienced ant keeper (I only started about a month ago), but to me, the tube looks like its too steep. Maybe its also too slippery for them to climb?
Go to the ant, O sluggard,
Observe her ways and be wise,
Which, having no chief,
Officer or ruler,
Prepares her food in the summer
And gathers her provision in the harvest.

- Lasius niger
- Crematogaster cerasi

Re: Ants not leaving nest to forage
Common UK black ant. Lasius niger
I not sure about steep as they are happy to climb up the sheer aides of the pot they are in and in addition there is a thin twig from the bottom.of the pot half way up the tube (where it gets level) and they climbed up that fine.
So I sure the could get out if they wanted.
However in the end I moved the pot up and layed it on this side. Now they have moved out to the tube linking to the portal so can access it and the test tubes.
Also counted 10-15 ants + queen moved with her brood so all looking good.
