How to keep smaller ants

I've had a hard time keeping smaller ants. They always die within the first week. I'm on my third Solenopsis queen and I'm worried. if there is too much cotton on the water or air end they will thirst or suffocate. But if there is too little then they will drown or escape. are there any tips?

Place the tube in a small outworld and remove the outer wad of cotton
