Winter ants are dying!!

I checked up on my Winter ants (aka false honeypot ants) and there is only one worker alive along with the queen. They have plenty of sugar water and the occasional protein. Why is this happening?? Could it be mold? Their test tub looks a little moldy so I put a new one in and now I just have to wait for them to move in to remove the icky one.

How many ants were there originally?
Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?
There are so many fascinating ants right where you live!
I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that aren't in your area.
