Worker acting strange carrying dead for days!

For the last week or so when I look in the out world there seems to be always one ant carrying a dead ant aimlessly around. She seems lost and not knowing where to put the body. I thought maybe it was attached and she couldn't detach the dead body. This isn't normal behavior that I've seen in this out world. Why is she acting like this.she is carrying a dead ant around as I type.

Just looked now and sure enough she's carrying a dead ant around! Maybe she's a crazy ant.

She wants to dump it somewhere far from her nest. You’re set up probably doesn’t allow her to do that so she’s caring it around looking for a good place to leave it, but she can’t find a good place.

The thing is in the wild they may walk 3,5,10,15 meters away to dump their dead. You can try extending the outworld. Usually they just start a dead pile not really where they want, but they have to put them somewhere. My colonies that don’t have lids the ants actually walk to the edge of the outworld and drop their dead over the edge onto the floor .

Do you not use a barrier for your outworlds? Seems a bit risky if they decide to relocate into your house lol.

You’d think right? But I do it with my tetramorium and Lasius colonies and they just stay in their nest. Although I did have a camponotus colony move out of one of my formicams and into an empty formicarium on the other side of my desk that I was saving for a different species. I keep a lid on those guys now .
