Hi, one of my Campo queens produced an Alate as her first brood. Does this not seem odd?
Thanks for any information

Re: Camponotus Sp. Brood
Is that a queen alate or a male one? If it is a male one ur queen is probably infertile

She produced a male one? How could she be infertile and still produce young?

Ant reproduction is very different from ours. The gender of an ant is decided on the amount of chromosomes rather than the different genes present. To make a queen or worker the queen needs a full set of chromosomes (half from herself and half from the male/males she mated with). However to make a drone (male reproductive) the eggs only needs half the amount of chromosomes, this means for a queen to produce drones she lays infertile eggs which contains only half of her genes. This also means that infertile queens can produce drones but can't produce workers.
Ant-keeper going into his 4th year of loving ants!
