Thank's for info about the honey. I've heard they don't much like it, but I haven't know this could even do them harm.

Wow that honey thing is very interesting now. I had offered my first colony some honey but they ate it or at least they had put their trash on it

It was so funny that one day later the honey was covered in some trash and it didn't look as if they had eaten much from it. :P
But they love their seeds for sure. Mine went crazy on wheat and sunflower seeds :D

Because of the size but they also eat paprika seeds which is easy to get fresh for me. Just buy a paprika open it and move over the seeds to remove them from the stump. Then leave them on a newspaper to dry and done.

Anyway. No more honey for my colony of messor barbarus then. I don't want to harm them. :P

They cover with trash everything they consider unimportant, and ther's possibility of getting spoiled. Clever girls.

Right now I'm lookin for nice cheap nest, the small one for maks 150-200 ants. I found something like that on Wish:

https://www.wish.com/product/5b1faa6479dba21e3762bf4a

It's not very much expensive, and I gues it's just what I need right now. Only I don't know if I put there Messor barbarus or Lasius niger. I know this formicarium is very small one, but for the beginning it's cool, and after a while I can give them better formicarium. I wonder how much would go to there.

I've bought this formicarium from Wish. I will wait for it about a month or so. I never know how many ants could live in nests, that is the biggest problem for me when considering buying a nest. But I've made few gypsum nests for Lasius, I have 3. I consider gypsum nests cool, cause you can do it youself, it's easy and for me it's even fun. Today I've also finished fourth gypsum nest for messor barbarus colony, but taking to account the fact they are cutting through gypsum, this nest will be temporary. I will put it into bigger box, which will be working as Out World.

Anyway, I have one Out World that was in use for a week or so by my problematic colony of Lasius niger (I have two Lasius niger colonies, I'm talking about first one now, the second colony is OK. Now this problematic colony is in the t-tubes portal). This Out World have a floor from gypsum, and it's covered by sand, so the sand is naturally glued to the gypsum surface. I have some black dotts there. I'm not sure, but could it be mold? In the Out World? My Messors also have an arena made this way, and there are no black dotts, Messors are leaving their trash at one place in the box, Lasius were rather leaving trash technicly where they stand... The sand I've used is the sand for birds to eat, so I haven't baked the sand, I consider it's clean it was in the box buyed at the pets store.

that's a good looking colony :D
Yesterday I got some fresh pumpkinseeds for my colony. I still got a small testcolony with only workers which lost their queen :C
And they so I offered them a seed. I just don't know if I have to open the seed or something so I put a whole seed in there and they seemed eager to get the what's inside of it :)

Sad colony without the Queen :(

I have 27 workers or so. Soon I'll have to think about bigger out world and nest. I have gypsum nest, and I'll put it into arena inside. Even if they will cut it, it'll be still in outworld.

I don't think they need an expansion soon since they are going to hybernation soon enough which means that they will not forage for a while. I will add some more seeds to my colonies testtube and have a last good check on them before I put them inside my cave. The other colonies will have to go inside my fridge.

Yesterday I added some bonzai to the fridge for their preparations but I think that my fridge will lose a lot of space cause I try to keep them inside the dark too. Well. I would recommend to wait with a bigger foraging area until next year. I also don't think that it will do them much harm of they have to share some space since they won't expand too much until they are offered more space.

I'm not going to hibernate them this year. I think this colony is to small for that. One year without hibernation will not harm them, and they will be stronger next year.
