Just caught a new queen. What now?

Congratulations on catching your first ant. But can you be tell if she is a queen and do you know if she was fertilized by a male ant?

But first things first. To get start you should prepare a testtube for your newly caught ant as shown in this tutorial by AntsCanada.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfzUILyCz8o

After you prepared the testtube you should try and get some pictures with a camera or your phone. It's not mandatory but if you are new, it's a big help for the people who help to ID your ant(s). Of course you can also take pictures after the next step.
Here's a tip for you. If you cannot get good a close up shot, putting some more distance between you and your ant. Then use the zoom function to get a closer look. Those picture will be useful for IDing (Identifying) your ant. In most cases it will be a queen but sometimes the queens look like workers making it extra difficult to see if they are queens or workers.

For IDing please visit our AntSpecies ID Center and follow the template we have created for you.

Now that you have prepare the testtube and perhaps taken some nice and clear pictures, you can put your ant inside of the testtube. Once this is done, close the testtube with some cotton (ideal) or a cork stopper (only temporarily please) and place it in a dark and undisturbed place.
For more information on this, check our FAQ on How often can I check on my ant queens?.

Doing some proper research is the best way to start an antcolony.

Also make sure to do your research. Once you have successfully id the queen, search up all articles about the species so you can take the best care of them. If you have any questions feel free to ask here, we will be more than happy to help
