First time keeper with some questions

Post: # 72940Post Dragonants

Hi, I was lucky enough to catch carpenter queen ant for 8 year-old son. She is in a test tube laying eggs. We are so excited to see what is happening.

I am planning to get a starter kit from AntsCanada. Do you think we can set up the colony outside, like on the porch? We are located in Seattle. I don't want any chance that ants escape from the set up inside the home..

If anyone can give us thoughts that would be wonderful!!

Just put them inside your house AntsCanada kits have very low chance of ants escaping so yeah don't worry.

rakuichijou,

Thank you for your comment. I guess I need to let go my anxiety about escaping.. I think I feel more confident after I see their products.

I'd say it's next to impossible for the ants to escape from the AC Store products. So I wouldn't worry about it. If you decide on an open topped arena, you can always cover it with gasoline mesh. That would allow air in, but won't let anything out.

Hawkeye,

Thank you for another positive feedback for AC product, and thanks for the tip! I hope the queen ant is doing ok, we try not to look at them too often. It seems that she has 7 eggs so far.

If your queen only has seven eggs, you wouldn't need to order the gear for another year or so, they will take a while to get that big.

Really? It would take that long? And the queen ant is ok in the little test tube for that long period of time..? Sorry so many questions!

At about twenty workers, you could maybe move them to a very small other container. Like the AC Test Tube portal.
