hybrid 2.0 gear setup

just set up my starter 2.0 kit and have a question, can i have a water test tube on left side of the formicarium and a sugar water test tube on the right, is that to much or is it ideal? also if its ideal do i still have to put apples and pears in the outworld as well? or thats overdoing things?
