Ant Keeping

I captured a multi queen phediole colony yesterday and put it in a large jar with dirt. I bought a formicarium but am expecting it on Thursday. How do I keep the ants alive until then? Also, when the formicarium arrives, how do I safely transfer the queens and workers into the formicarium without hurting the queens and getting too much dirt into the formicarium?

I would recommend providing some sort of protein, and water and some sort of sugar as well. As for transferring them, try to use some sort of tube and let them move on their own.

What if they are too happy in their jar and don't want to move. Is there anything that they don't like that would drive them out of the jar? Without hurting them obviously.

If they are already in dirt then you're a bit limited, you could try using heat or lack there of, and do the opposite to the formicarium, or you could leave the jar attached, then you would not only have a bigger area, but the ants could have some privacy ant let you see in some other parts, It's all up to you, but Try to do what's best for the ants as well.

Ok thanks. Also, how do you get it to say what ants you have under a post?

In the user control panel in the upper right corner, you can edit signature and that is what shows up.
