Welcome to the forum
you always have Lasius Niger (black pavement ant) in UK i think, they are small. I caught 5 queens this summer and they founded colonies and have more than 20 ants now they are not as flashy as lots of other ants, but they are easy and very interesting to watch grow and move about. I think it is to late to catch a queen this year the UK but you could bye one from a GAN farmer. But they will go to hibernation pretty soon any way, so i would wait until the spring to buy or even better (in my opinion) catch one next summer your self you say you are patient .

Lasius flavus are also common in the U.K. They are commonly known as yellow meadow ants. Myrmica rubra is another option, although their queens are semi-claustral, and they have a painful sting. Tetramorium caespitum are a fast-growing, easy to keep species.
"God made every kind of wild beasts and every kind of livestock and every kind of creeping things;" (including ants) "and God saw that it was good." Genesis 1:25
