Re: Queen ant question
Workers of smaller species will sometimes cling to queens as they take off.
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.

Re: Queen ant question
This can be normal behavior for some small ants as pointed out above. However, you should examine it very carefully to make sure that there are no phoretic mites or bloodsucking mites on this queen. If they even after closer examination still look to be small ants there is probably nothing to worry about. However I would say it is unusual to have a freshly-caught queen with mites
As always, wishing you well on your exciting ant adventure, Ants the Lowcountry.
