Best ways to image?

Hey folks! I'm trying to get a better way to image ants than holding a magnifying glass in front of my iPhone camera. Sadly I don't have a ton of funds to dump into this so I'm trying to keep it under $40.
My question is, would it be worthwhile to try a cheap digital microscope like https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Microscope-Flexible-Observation-Magnification/dp/B00XNYXQHE/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1506999485&sr=8-5&keywords=macro+camera ? Or is that a waste of money and I should stick with the phone-and-magnifying glass method (or maybe buy a chip clip-on macro lens)? And if I did either, what's a good magnification level?
