Am I Missing Something

I have a young Pheidole Sp. colony. It has several workers (haven't counted them yet, as it's difficult) but I only ever see one or two outside of the nest at any given time. I've checked periodically during in the mornings, during the day, and at night and I never see more than one or two. I caught one eating some of the piece of hotdog I have in there for them, but I have never seen them at the water cotton ball or the sugar-water cotton ball. Could I be doing something wrong? There are some pictures below of the setup and the colony (at least as much of the colony as I can get, as they have tunnels throughout all that dirt).

Small colonies normally stay in the nest quiet a bit, so as long as as the colony gets bigger more workers forage I would not worry. :)
Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?
There are so many fascinating ants right where you live!
I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that aren't in your area.
