Building an ant farm

Hello all,
I had a small ant farm as a kid and loved it, now I want to make one myself for my daughter (I'm always quite interested) I plan to make the sandwich type farm due to having the material's. I just need some advice.

Ant species in question : Black Garden Ant Colony – Lasius niger which I will buy from a seller, queen included.

1) how thick should the gap be ?
2) in terms of feeding them I was going to create a tunnel system to other boxes, is there an easier alternative?
3) the soil will be 1 part soil 2 parts building sand, would this be ok ?
4) how do I keep the soil moist ?
5) once the farm is made is it a case of just putting the ants in an leaving them to their own devices?

Any more advice would be welcome. Thank you.
