First off..
Can queens still be found in australia? specifically Queensland.. being spring i would assume so but im VERY noobish at this so i really don't have a clue.

Second... I know the most common ants would either be meat ants or the sugar ants and i would like to know how long they normally take the form a decent size colony.

Any info would be amazing and can't wait to hear your replies.

Yes, there are queens everywhere. You might look out for Myrmecia, or the bull/bulldog ants. They might be easy to keep.

Awesome, you wouldn't happen to know a rough time when they will stop flying/go back under ground

watch this video. Its from AntsCanada and has Australia's nuptual flight schedule in it.
Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Are you sure about Myrmecia? They have one of the most venomous stings in the world and are super aggressive, not a beginner species. :)
With all the things ants can do, you wonder, who rules the planet :?

Yeah.. lol. Try the sugar ants and meat ants first. I only said them because they keep small colonies, and I thought they might be easier to keep because of that.

Keep an eye out for the iridescent Iridomyrmex, for sure!
