Do workers and broods work/live without queens?

Do workers and broods work/live without queens?

I am brand new learning and researching because I want to start a pet ant colony 🐜.

Why would someone sell only workers or broods or even workers with broods and not a queen?

I thought they worked for the queen.
Can someone explain this for me?

I think the brood selling is for something called brood boosting, but I can't recall for sure
New antkeeper in Virginia currently doesn’t have a colony plan to start next Spring :lol:
