Help with Queens
I've been watching videos and admiring ant colonies for years now. That being said, I'm just now allowed to get one myself (wife hates insects) and I just don't have much time to catch one myself. I'm looking for tips as to when the best times to capture are specifically because I only have 4 or 5 hours free on the weekends and maybe a hour a day before the sun sets.
Also I've looked for a colony via the AntsCanada site but none in my area are available. Not only that but I'd like to be there from the beginning with my first tiny Empress lol

If you want to find species like camponotus look on nature trails wwith trees and if you want to find usually other spicies look for them on pavements next to grass

Re: Help with Queens
Thank you for a swift reply but I work from 0400 to 1700 daily, so I guess I'm gonna miss prime time to catch. Perhaps I'll be fortunate enough to happen upon a straggler.

Sadly it's a steel mill in a different state. It doesn't seem like a big deal but I don't want to transport over state lines

You were right! I happened upon what seems to be a Camponotus Pennsylvanicus queen. She's massive and wants to lay some eggs I hope. I had also found one belonging to the Formica genus but she drowned in her test tube sadly

Re: Help with Queens
I give up. This was my third queen. One escaped, one drown, and now a wild colony has pulled out the cotton on her test tube and killed my camponotus queen. I don't have the time to look for more and I got yelled at for looking at work. I won't be joining yall this year I guess
