So, I am new to ant keeping. I have keep a lot of other types of animals and a few different insects but never ants.
I am currently living in West Virginia attending a PA school out here. I am wondering if it is too late in the neptial season to catch a queen.
Do you have any pointers?
TIA

Lasius fly in a few days. Myrmica follow. You could also find Brachymyrmex or Crematogaster if you're lucky.

Do you know when the Lasius will fly? Any tips on snagging one? I really appreciate it.

I live in New York and I caught two crematogastor queens today. I saw a third, but was not fast enough to snag it. I would say that it might be a little tough to get queens right now, but it is true that Lasius are flying now, especially Lasius Neoniger, the Labor Day ant!

Good luck hunting!

Try looking for them near parks or places with dirt or sand. Keep an eye out, as they are good at sneaking by unnoticed

So you think in just a few days is when they are going to fly then?
Also is it best to look for them in the am or when?

They should start flying in the next few days. The best time to look is from 11 am to about 3 pm

Around Labor day. There are smaller flights throughout the rest of September. You can find them on the ground, but they sometimes hang out on decorative grasses, or on flat partially inclosed areas like a trampoline. They look like a swarm of beetles flying through the air, and they are pretty slow fliers so you can catch them with a simple butterfly net.
