Re: Caught a Formica Fusca colony, what next?

I was digging around for extremely young Formica Fusca colonies (because queen alates fly and hibernate in the fall and hibernate over winter before begining their colonies in the spring). I captured a queen, 7 workers, and about 15 brood (10 were larva, 5 were pupa by my count). They are currently...

Re: Is this even a Queen - and if so what kind?

If you're a beginner I recommend that you release her as they are not a starter species. But if you're up for the challenge I suggest you keep her. If you think you can handle her, I would keep her.

Looks like Pheidole but huge might be tetramorium immigrantus
6mm is way too small for a Pheidole queen. This is definitely T.immigrans.

Parasitic Formica queen.
Do you know the species?

Re: Weird growth on ant head

Looks like some fungus to me (try googling pandora formicae) If I remember correctly, pandora sp. are transmitted through aphids. Unless you have aphids, or plants that have come in contact with aphids in your setup, or have even been feeding your ants predators that eat aphids (ex. ladybug nymphs)...
