Re: ooper's Camponotus modoc colony (#2)
I have been doing a quick check every day for the past week. Probably not the best practice, but too curious not to. I checked yesterday but still only one nanitic. I checked just now and see that a second one has eclosed, yay! I'll post more pix when all three have eclosed.

Re: Is joining GAN farm easy
I joined the GAN Project a few months ago here in Utah, USA and have sold 3 queens so far. The actual transaction process is very simple. You get an email from AntsCanada (Mikey) indicating that someone has just purchased a queen from you and that the person will be contacting you soon to arrange fo...

Re: dry cat food for ant?
I have successfully fed my Formica ant colonies wet cat food, but in one nest which was especially humid/moist at the time, the cat food got moldy within a day or so. They just left it there for awhile, then covered it with little wood/bark chips that I had added as a substrate for them. After a few...

Re: too many queens
I will have to think about it and ask my parents (i'm underaged). And i'll have to find out the species, does anyone know if there's something on the internet that can help me identifiying the species? http://antweb.org/ is a great resource, though it takes some time to get used to it. I have still...

Re: ooper's Formica sp. colony (#3)
August 11, 2015 I didn't track this colony with photos or videos since the initial video listed above, but I will do so now as I am creating this journal for them. Over the last 4 months, the colony has grown quite a bit. They eat potato bugs, meal worms, cat food and sugar water. About a week ago, ...

ooper's Formica sp. colony (#3)
April 14, 2015 As I was out hunting for newly mated queens in the local mountains, opening up rotting logs with a hammer, I found an existing Formica colony and noticed the queen was visible. I decided to collect the queen and as much of the young colony as I could. Ended up getting about 25 workers...

Re: ooper's Camponotus modoc colony
Very nice! I notice larger species tend to produce less eggs on their founding stage. My camponotus sericeus had a total of about 6 eggs right now in her test tube while my solenopsis molesta had about 10 nanitic plus a few more. Yes I have noticed the same thing. My Monomorium minimum queens all h...

Re: Bean Family Ant Journal
Russ, that is quite a story! I must say that is pretty lucky to find a queen 5 minutes after watching a video about them. I suppose that is the power of the AntsCanada videos! Great that your son is involved too. That will be a great hobby for both of you.
