Re: Ant Identificarion

If you have an android, go into the settings menu on your camera app and set mode to pro, then select the zoom function from the main camera screen and set it to manual. The latest update will enlarge the image for finer focus. If you have an apple it should be similar instructions but I don't use A...

Worker ID, okinawa

I saw some ants on a discarded cupcake wrapper next to a softball field earlier today and they were sitting still enough I decided to snap a picture. I believe they are nylanderia, but I want to confirm or update my guess, and I want to familiarize myself with what the local species look like. http:...

Care for Nylanderia?

I recently caught some Nylanderia queens (and have several eggs from some of them) so I am trying to find care references for this ant, but I'm coming up blank. I am seeing that they are related to paratrechina longicornis, so perhaps I can simply treat them as such? Does anyone have experience with...

Okinawa Nylanderia sp.

Alright. We just had our first nuptial flight (that I noticed) in a while here in Okinawa, Japan, last Thursday, the 4th of May 2017. It was about 25C outside with virtually no wind, and it had just rained hard the previous day, so conditions were absolutely perfect for a flight. When I first walked...

Re: Okinawa queen ID

I'm not used to Nylanderia being that large, but there aren't really other options. Maybe it's a new species? The ant population on Okinawa is largely undocumented, after all. Oops. :!: I was overestimating their size because they didn't want to crawl over the tape (I will be more careful with this...
