Wow! Awesome how you managed to put together a formicarium just like that. And great pictures too! How's the colony doing now? Have they returned to the wood yet?

Re: Aphids important?

Hello agentsceptile, Aphids need a plant that is alive in order to stay alive themselves. So if you want your ants to be able to 'milk' aphids you might want to think about giving them access to an area which has a Chinese Springrose (Helleboris Foetidus.) This flower blooms all year long and in my ...

Re: My ant sertup

I am thinking about housing a colony of carpenter ants as well. I've gone a little overboard and designed a paladerium to be a mini biotope and mostly self-sufficient. https://i.imgur.com/3gbX7cE.jpg https://i.imgur.com/O7jZlFb.jpg Since these type of ants are mad for the honeydew secreted by aphids...

Re: I need feedback on my design and plans!

Hello again, I've done some further digging (no pun intended) and have made some changes to the design. https://i.imgur.com/3gbX7cE.jpg https://i.imgur.com/GDqf3wU.jpg Aquarium As not all fish or creatures might enjoy a strong current, I wanted to incorporate a more tranquil location for them to rel...

I need feedback on my design and plans!

Hello Antfarmers! I am completely new to keeping ants, in fact, I still have to start... I would love some feedback from you guys on my design for an enclosure. I have based this idea loosely on the youtube videos from AntsCanada, combining the floating island, the golden springs and other elements,...

Re: Herbs in Formicarium

You might find this site helpful: https://www.mnn.com/your-home/organic-farming-gardening/stories/12-plants-that-repel-unwanted-insects As far as I know mint doesn't repel ants, but it tends to spread quickly, branching out under the soil. I have actually been toying with the idea of incorporating M...

Re: Hello to all the new members.

Why hi there! And thank you very much! I am completely new to keeping ants, but I am eager to start. I have designed a paladerium (?) (a terrarium inside an aquarium) with a separate refugem, inspired by all the youtube videos I saw posted by AntsCanada... Now I am Dutch and I haven't got all the li...
