Not an ant, but not a velvet ant either, most likely some other non-winged wasp. Velvet ants are very fuzzy, and that appears smooth and shiny

I removed the outworld, and am just keeping them in a test tube like any small founding colony.

I found this today in the median, filled with rocks and ornamental trees, of a large parking lot. It's black, about and about 10 mm. The segments on the gaster are very pronounced. I tried to get a pic of the petiole, but it appears to be either very small or nonexistent. Anyone? https://imgur.com/...

Over the summer I have been trying to find queen ants with out much luck. It is my first time ant keeping and I haven't been lucky in finding a queen. I have found a solenopsis invicta but I don't think she is fertile because she isn't taking care of her eggs. Also her eggs don't seem to be develop...
