Well, there were definitely not Queen ants, as it's unnatural for thousands of them to be together, or in the sea at all. Also, are you sure they're ants? Because ants have no reason to be in the sea, unless if this is some Norwegian thing I don't know.

Could be some other insect.

Try soaking it into hot water to soften it up. Then put it in, as it was most likely made like that so it wouldn't come off.

Honestly, if the workers seem restless and they have enough resources, it probably means they are looking for their queen. I disagree there.
