Re: Finding queen ants
I am new to ant keeping and have been trying to find a queen, however I have been having a tough time. I am not sure what to look for or when to do it. My location is Pittsburgh, pa, of that helps. Thanks for any help. :D The best way to find queen ants is to walk around on flat surfaces (such as a...

Re: Polyrhachis dives move or not to move?
Hello everyone. I have a colony of Polyrhachis dives with about 30-40 workers. They are in a test tube setup for now and was wondering if I should move them soon. It doesn't seem too overcrowded but a lot of them have been pulling on the cotton. What size of container would be good for such a colon...

Re: Queen ant? Colorado
Hi, I found this little creature flopping around tonight, it has wings but wasn't able to fly as one wing was damaged. I am trying to figure out if it is a queen, and fertilized, as I wanted to start a colony. It is in the Southern Denver area of Colorado, USA and we had a big rain storm a day and ...

Sponges work better than cotton for test tubes.
I have discovered that using artificial sponges in the place of cotton is beneficial. 1. There are no strands for the queen and/or brood to get tangled in. 2. I would assume it would limit mold and bacteria growth, as cotton just feeds mold. 3.You can see the brood better if the queen places them on...

Re: Over feeding - what are the problems
I honestly have no clue. I just feed mine a big glob of raw honey and just keep feeding them insects until they refuse to accept them.

Re: Feeding Thief Ants
Anyone know what to feed a new Thief Ant colony in a test tube, with about 3 workers. I need protein and sweet stuff. Solenopsis molesta have a peculiar diet. They are also known as 'grease ants' since they prefer insects and grease over insects and carbs. I once owned a colony, and they seemed to ...
